Revitalized Medvedev Claims Maiden Championship in Nearly 30 Months

A comeback Daniil Medvedev claimed his first title for nearly 30 months with a win over Corentin Moutet in the competition final.

Medvedev, a former number one, has experienced a difficult year, achieving just one match at the major tournaments and suffering a difficult moment at the New York tournament.

The player's inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his serve in specific - resulted in him falling of the elite rankings and ultimately separating with long-time mentor Cervara.

Now training with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, the tennis star has gradually progressed in the recent weeks - culminating in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over opponent Moutet.

This marks his maiden championship after the Italian tournament and first on a hard surface from that period of the previous year.

Success also means Medvedev has achieved twenty-one victories at 21 various events.

"It's the first time I'm at a tournament with my both daughters simultaneously, so to secure a title is really nice," commented world number 14 Daniil Medvedev.

"This victory is in honour of my second daughter her name, because the maiden victory I achieved when my older daughter her name was delivered was for her."

The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his last six championship matches, featuring in that event in the past months.

Medvedev's counter-punching play style and frequent reactions on the playing surface had caused some to wonder if his ability to compete at the highest level was finished.

Yet the 29-year-old has altered his approach in the past month, attempting to advance forward and perform assertively, supported by an improved service.

Medvedev fought back from a disadvantage in the first set against the challenging Moutet, taking four of the last five exchanges to take the lead.

Both players swapped service breaks in the middle set before Moutet, bidding for his maiden professional title, took control to create a final set.

Moutet defended 4 initial chances in a competitive final set before Medvedev secured a break to 15 to close out the victory.

Appropriately, he earned victory with a shot at the front of the court, with Moutet incapable to control a shot after over two and a half hours.
