Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the option to challenge particular rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
